** Important announcements and breaking changes
# Here, we list the *most important* changes and changes that _likely_
# require user action for most Org mode users.
# Sorted from most important to least important.
*** The LaTeX preview system has been overhauled
Org mode's LaTeX preview system has been rewritten with several improvements and new features.
- LaTeX Previews are generated in bulk, and hundreds of LaTeX
fragments can be processed per second.
- Images are placed in the buffer continuously as they are generated.
- Preview generation is asynchronous and will not block Emacs.
- Inline previews are aligned and scaled to match the font baseline
and size.
- Previews scale along with text when the text scale is changed.
- Previews are coloured to match surrounding text and the active
theme.
- SVG previews automatically change colors when the active theme
changes.
- Error encountered when compiling LaTeX fragments can be accessed by
mousing over preview images.
- All of the above applies also to images generated for LaTeX
fragments in HTML and ODT exports using the dvisvgm and dvipng
methods.
Additionally,
- Preview overlays can hide and show themselves dynamically based on
cursor position.
- Org mode can auto-generate LaTeX previews as you type or edit the
text of existing ones.
- Org mode can keep equation numbering consistent by regenerating
previews as needed.
Relevant options and commands can be found via =M-x customize-group=
=org-latex-preview=, and in the Org manual.
*** LaTeX previews now require the preview.sty LaTeX package or style file
The new LaTeX preview system requires the preview.sty LaTeX package or
style file to be available. preview.sty is included by default with
all commonly used TeX distributions.
For information on preview.sty see
https://ctan.org/tex-archive/macros/latex/contrib/preview?lang=en.
*** New library =ox-mathml= implements support for MathML exports
This library is composed of code from and provides functionality that
was previously spread across =org=, =ox-html= and =ox-odt=.
*** Beamer export puts theme information right after =\documentclass{beamer}=
The Beamer exporter now places the theme configuration immediately
after the document class declaration when using the =beamer= class,
unless ~org-latex-classes~ or =#+LATEX_HEADER= defines a document
header for =beamer= that includes theme configuration. For example:
#+BEGIN_SRC emacs-lisp
(setq org-latex-classes
'(("beamer"
"\\documentclass[11pt]{beamer}
\\usetheme{Madrid}"
("\\section{%s}" . "\\section*{%s}")))
#+END_SRC
will make the Beamer exporter ignore the ~#+BEAMER_...~ keywords
in the document that are related to theme configuration.
*** Org mode now uses =compat.el= third-party package to support older Emacs versions
This change is mostly technical and should not affect most users.
However, people who install Org from git source might be affected.
It is now necessary to manually install =compat.el= using Emacs'
package manager.
*** ~org-mouse~ tag and priority menus are now separate
The "Tags and Priorities" section of the global context menu is split
into a "Tags" section and a "Priorities" section.
*** ~org-babel-tangle-single-block~ may return multiple target files
When called with non-nil ONLY-THIS-BLOCK,
