[16:43:53] <alkersan> Hi. Did anyone play with u-boot on rpi5? I've read that it recently got quite good support of bcm2712 and rp1, and it can provide just enough of an UEFI to kick in a generic distro. Is such approach sound?

[17:04:36] <fermino> Not yet but pi4+uboot is on my list of things to do; it shouldn't be that different for the pi5 (hopefully)

[19:59:42] <alkersan> Yay, it works. This patch series adds proper usb and nvme support https://patchwork.ozlabs.org . And all I need it to decompress the kernel_2712.img and put it into /efi/boot/bootaa64.efi, because rpi already builts them with EFI_STUB

[21:18:28] <alkersan> I see. Got it
[21:20:42] <alkersan> is this room bridged to matrix/element?
[21:24:48] <fermino> Yup
[21:25:49] <Antiz> Actually, it's not really
[21:26:11] <fermino> It's only specific users, right?
[21:26:11] <Antiz> There's a bridge but it's reserved for staff
[21:27:13] <Antiz> fermino: Yup, the bridge is reserved for Arch staff. Some exceptions were done in the past to allow other users for this channel specifically but we stopped doing that as far as I know.
[21:31:50] <alkersan> ok, not a problem. Just didn't use irc in a decade.
[21:33:59] <alkersan> Anyway, regarding the rpi5 and u-boot - could that be a way for more lean integration with the arm64 port? Given that systemd, UAPI, gpt auto discovery pretty much require uefi nowadays, and rpi firmware will likely never be providing such env - this seems like a plausible middleground, right?
[21:36:45] <fermino> Most definitely! I've also looked at the edk2 implementation before but sadly it's broken for the pi5
[21:36:58] <fermino> There's some discussion about it on https://gitlab.archlinux.org
